Yukon people

At a wolverine or wolf party they bring food, they pass it around and they eat.  It lasts for the evening. A long time ago around here when somebody caught a wolverine, as they came back towards the village they would call, “Doyon ghuxo{,”  the chief/rich man is coming. When they arrived, “Doyon neyo,” the chief is here. So people would get ready for the feast.  As a sign of respect they put beads around the female wolverine’s neck and put it in the front of the kashim (inside, opposite the door).  They’d bring food and place it on the floor in front of the wolverine. They call it doyon because they figure it’s a rich animal, wolverine and wolf. They used to really treat those two animals good. They really respect those and bear because those are dangerous animals.  People never had guns, just bow and arrows or spear.  For a bear the men used to cook the head and the feet. They put it in a big pot with a big canvas underneath so no meat would touch the ground.  Uncle, he killed bear and they invite the boys and men to it in fish camp (in Bonasilla).  (Hannah Maillelle 03/05/02)

At a funeral people stamp their feet 4 times the last thing when the coffin is still open, before they close it. They lift the person’s spirit up so they don’t bury the spirit with them.  It’s a spirit sending.  There’s always somebody there by the coffin that’s supposed to be lifting the spirit up.  You just tell the person Diggi ts’in’! “up” in Native.  If you don’t do that they hang around all the time. But if you do that they go up. [According to Hannah Maillelle, 2/26/2002]
