Donna 2/13/2005 This is a great find and resource to study Alaska natives. I lived in Alaska for 6 years and fell in love with the place and people while there. I miss the winters, summers, and flavor that the state offers all who come there. Now I teach in Texas and want my students to one day visit the Last Great Frontier or at least understand the greatness of the people there.

Steve Ongtooguk 12/7/2004 Hello Brother, Hope all is well, Happy Holidays! Drop me a line. All is well here in Denver.

John Sileo 12/3/2004 Regarding the backlash against racial comments made at the High School in Feb. '04, it sure is heartwarming to hear that the kid was punished for what he wrote. Think of all the billions of racial comments that are made throughout our country, especially the south where I live, that go unpunished or uncriticized. Thousands of times I have heard degrading racial remarks, even made them myself, thinking it was no big deal. But it is and I have learned my lesson. But mainstream society largely doesn't agree despite some efforts otherwise. For example, in the face of degrading racial comments towards Mexican's at my work, after 1.5 years of ignoring them, I made a stand against it even though the owner himself was making them. I was demoted, wrongly accused of lying, and fired because I wouldn't take $10,000 and sign a form agreeing not to sue the company, presumably for racial termination over racial discrimination. The owner fumed, he said, because I accused him of being a racists even though he made racial comments dozens of times in front of me. It's no big deal he insisted, sometimes it's true that Mexican's are stupid. If you make degrading racial comments, I told him, then you are degrading to other races, period. I don't think it is a coincidence that he had the same disillusionment about firing off rude racial comments being "no big deal" and not meaning you are, to some extent, racist. My previous disillusionment was his current disillusionment. You don't have to be a member of a racist organization or make powerfully abusive racial comments to be racist. But this disillusionment happens ALL THE TIME. I know, I am white. Soft racism is ugly beyond your imagination and I am happy to lose my job over fighting this issue. It is the least I should do to make up for all that I have said.

Desiree Ulroan 12/2/2004 Thank You Alaskool and John Pingayak for your helpful information that is used for my ANS research paper that I am writing on Subsistence here at UAF. Wonderful!! Hello to Chevak and those who know me. Send me a note at fsdau@uaf.edu

Carolyn Fasel 8/3/2004 My mom lived at the Teller Mission for 3-4 years after the Brevig's, with her parents and two brothers (one brother was named Neelak Serawlook) about 1912 to 1916. She spoke Norwegian to her parents, English to the teacher, and Inupiak to her playmates. People made such a fuss about it when they went back to US mainland that she and her brother vowed never to speak it again. Too bad. She did sometimes refer to herself as "Wonga" when making out our chore lists.

Linda Rosenoff 7/25/2004 Hello everyone. I am from Salt Lake City, Utah. I recently took a trip with my sister to Anchorage and met my cousins for the first time ( we being in our fifties and they in their seventies). It was so thrilling to view artifacts and the country. We hope to make to the Aleutiens next time. We hope to meet more relatives in the future and learn more about our native heritage in the coming years. Thank you for the website.

Jody Beemer 7/21/2004 I feel that your research was bias and very negative concerning Native American. We are not as ignorant as you think. In my family I have three sisters with masters degree and my daughter has a masters degree. We are more civilized than you think.

Mutsuhito Kikura 7/20/2004 Please change my name to Kay Johns.

Alethea McKee 6/21/2004 My mother, Edna Todhunter-Reynolds is in her last years of earth. I have asked her to teach me the language of her village and she is amazingly patient, as she painstakingly instructs me. She was born in Kiana and moved to Kotzebue when she was young. Her parents were Martha (Kapkuna) Hadley-Todhunter, her father was Charles Walter Todhunter. This website has been invaluable to me and has changed my life and has given my mother memories that she hasn't thought of in years. Thank you for helping keep the Eskimo Language alive!

Joseph Toman 5/29/2004 Basicly you and all Indian (US Corp groups) make me sick because you love the situation you are in you do not want sovereignty - you think you are sovereign because you suck on the tits of the US government your money cow. You don't have the gumption to set yourself individually free let alone your tribe. If you love your gov check of "no money" and love the situation you are in then you deserve what you have and the government you have. If you want to start understanding the situation you are in then write: Sharon C Smyth, c/o Po box 532, Kasilof Alaska, an Elder of the Gwich'in Dena'ina tribe of Alaska

I was wondering if anyone knows of any documentaries on the Yup'ik speaking communities of Alaska and where I could find that information, and perhaps obtain a copy, showing this to the class would be extremely helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Mikko 2/7/2004 The Time published on September 22, 1997 James Walsh's article Unnatural Selection. Yet the eugenics program that authorized sterilizations of 'social undesirables', begun in 1935, continued long after the war, persisting until an agency that called itself chillingly the National Institute for Racial Hygiene died a quiet death in 1976. In postwar decades when Social Democratic Sweden considered itself a citadel of enlightenment and tolerance, the country was silently pursuing principles of racial purity long since discredited in most of the world. During those 41 years, some 60,000 Swedes were sterilized as misfits who did not meet the ideal of the blond, blue-eyed, intelligent Scandinavian.

cheryl hilmes 1/31/2004 I was hoping to find information about Native languages being taught in rural schools. I'd like to have research behind me when I address the possibility of Yup'ik or other Native languages being eliminated because of NCLB. I believe strongly that this language immersion MUST be kept, but I'm not sure what to tell others when they ask me why. Thanks for your help.
