"Atanarjuat"

The Canadian Inuit-made movie "Atanarjuat" (a.k.a. "The Fast Runner") has made big, big waves in the past year's movie world. It's on many critics' Top Ten of 2001 lists and has been nominated and/or won lots of awards in 2001 and 2002. Best of all it is truly a fantastic work created by a community and both the story of its making and the movie itself are utterly inspiring. More about this terrific movie is at the Atanarjuat Web site. Also see the site for the community production company, Isuma for more on how the project came together.

Here's another good link for this movie, which includes some reviewer comments to see how this work by Native people was received by critics.

The screenplay was recently published and there's a brief article on that here.
