Village of Noatak

Village of Noatak

This photograph demonstrates the importance of the airport for rural communities in Alaska since there is no road access. It also illustrates the prominence of the school -- typically the largest structure in a community and historically often the only one with running water. The uniform appearance of the houses is a result of state and federally funded public housing development projects.

Photographer: Tommy Ongtooguk. Paul Ongtooguk Collection.
